Ariane Weinberger est ethnologue et anthropologue culturel. Elle offre ici un travail très novateur et pionnier quant à l’interprétation des oeuvres d’art paléolithiques. Son essai propose un nouveau regard sur la production artistique du Paléolithique supérieur européen, en particulier les Vénus en ronde-bosse et l’art pariétal des grottes profondes. Que nous apprend ce type d’art sur la forme mentale, le niveau de conscience, le système de valeurs, la spiritualité et le style de vie de nos ancêtres ? Comment peut-on expliquer la simultanéité de l’apparition d’un art si homogène sur un continent si vaste ? In fine, quelles seraient les conditions requises pour un nouveau saut de conscience de notre espèce ?
Ariane Weinberger is an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist. She offers here highly innovative and pioneering research concerning the interpretation of Palaeolithic works of art. Her essay propose a new look at artistic production in the European Upper Palaeolithic, in particular the Venus figurines in the round and parietal art in deep caves. She attempts to contribute new responses to old questions:
What is the earliest manifestation of contact with the «Major Purpose»? How and in what context was it produced? What were the repercussions? Is there a link between the appearance of the groundbreaking art of modern humans and the disappearance of Neanderthals? What is the earliest evidence for transcendental experience beyond simple post-mortem beliefs? What level of depth was reached and by what means? Under what form was this experience materialized in the world? What meanings were given to the Feminine, the Bestiary and the Cave itself? What do we learn from this kind of art on mental form, the level of consciousness, the value system, spirituality and style in the lives of our distant ancestors? How can we explain the simultaneity of the appearance of an art so uniform across a continent so vast? Ultimately, what are the conditions required for a new leap in consciousness in our species?
